If there is one thing most people can agree on, it’s the fact that candy is loved by many. Whether you like sweet, sugary candies or rich chocolate bars, you are never too old to peruse the Halloween candy aisle of the grocery store. As this candy-filled holiday approaches, there is one dental-friendly way to curb the damage sugar can cause all while enjoying your favorite treats.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is a naturally occurring substance found in plant sources. You might recognize this ingredient in some of your favorite gums or mints. It only has two thirds the calories of “normal” sugar and can even help prevent cavities.

Susan Sloan, a local dental hygienist at Naperville Dental Associates says, “When you ingest Xylitol, say for instance, you chew gum with Xylitol in it, it makes it impossible for the bacteria that causes cavities to grow in your mouth.”

Surprisingly, Xylitol can also help prevent other health issues. In fact, a substantial intake of this ingredient helps increase activity of white blood cells that fight infection, reduces bacteria that can lead to cardiovascular disease, and increases bone density. It can even repair minor decay in your mouth.

To reap maximum benefits, it is suggested that you ingest a significant amount of Xylitol daily. “I would think about always picking candy (or things like that), with Xylitol in them. Chewing four or five pieces of gum with this ingredient in it is an example of the amount you need,” says Sloan.

Next time you are buying your favorite sweet snack, try adding a pack of Xylitol sweetened gum, like Orbit. Although it won’t instantly treat your cavities, it might help you prevent them.
