With the brutal Chicagoland winter approaching, showing off your style while still staying warm may be a challenge for North Central College students this year. After all, it’s hard to see your outfit when it is covered up by a big, bulky jacket. What’s a stylish student to do?

Don’t stress. You do not have to kick your style to the curb to keep from getting frostbitten this year. There are so many ways to dress so you can stay warm and still show off your fashion sense with none of them requiring you to breaking the bank either. Here are some tips for braving the cold weather while still looking your finest:

Invest in a classic and stylish coat:

Your coat is the most important part of your winter wardrobe, so invest in a trendy one that will last you for several years. If you want something classic that will not go out of style, then I recommend a pea coat. A good quality, wool pea coat will stand the test of time while keeping you super warm. Pick one up in black or grey if you want a basic coat that goes with everything, Don’t be afraid to invest in something a little louder if you find one in a shade of red or hot pink. Bold-colored pea coats are eye-catching!

If your style is on the trendier side, then consider picking up a chic winter coat like a plaid parka, swing coat or cocoon coat. You will make a statement and stand out from the crowd with your unique style!

Accessorize your outfit:

Accessorizing is not just for the regular months. The cold winter months allow you to take advantage of the wide selection of accessories to keep you warm and stylish. I love scarves more and more as the temperature drops. There are so many different ways to wear and tie them. Additionally when they are paired with a basic coat, while adding a pop of color to an otherwise bland outfit.

And don’t forget about knee high socks this winter. Make a statement while keeping your legs and feet warm by wearing them above your winter boots.

If it is in your budget, consider picking up two winter coats this year. You can designate one for every day wear and one for special occasions. This way you can alternate them and keep your winter wardrobe looking fresh. For example, I have a basic grey pea coat that I spent a little more on for everyday use, and a cheaper black “statement” coat for nights out or whenever I feel like standing out.

At the end of the day, being warm is most important. No matter how cute and stylish your winter outfit is, if it’s not keeping you warm, then it’s not doing its job. This is why it is crucial to spend the extra money on a quality clothing to keep you warm and toasty this winter season.
