Kaufman turns into a buffet-with-a-view

While the students enjoyed their winter break with family or vacationed in tropical paradise for six weeks, North Central College’s Kaufman Dining Hall continued to update its interior dining experience.

Coming back to the main dining hall on campus, what used to be just buffet-style tables to grab food is now a designed to watch the cooks prepare the daily food and a way to enjoy the show. Students are able to walk over to get pizza, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and dessert while having a view of how everything is cooked, just like BD’s Mongolian Grill or several Japanese Hibachi restaurants.

Although it appears to be appealing for the hundreds of visiting high school students who have taken interest in attending the College, do the renovations satisfy more of what the students want?

Some argue that although the cooking appliances make the dining hall look pristine, it still does not give more seating room for the 3,000 students that currently attend North Central. Many of the students, even commuters, have a meal plan on campus and because of the current blizzards and chilling weather that has reached Illinois, it’s more likely that students want to sit down and eat. Although many of the students find it interesting to be able to see all the food being fried or grilled, it may have been a more suitable option to include more room for seating arrangements through the renovation process.

But the updates that Kaufman Dining Hall produced within the six-week period has given a better sense of communication between employees and students as they are given many delicious food choices in a four-star restaurant form. From fresh pizza that sizzles after being pulled out from a flamed-cooked oven to varieties of meats being serrated into slices, it’s no wonder more students want to eat at Kaufman with all of these beautiful updates.
