Movie trailers consume the Internet

The Internet was overwhelmed over the course of just a few days with millions of views of the latest sci-fi and superhero movie trailers for movies that are to be released this year and next year.

The first trailer released was “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” on April 16, 2015. This was the second trailer to be released for this movie and it has received about 6.68 million views on YouTube so far. This movie takes place about 30 years after the events of “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” as many are still working towards peace for the Empire did not fall off the face of the earth after the defeat of the Emperor.

The new Star Wars trailer introduces its audience to some newer characters, such as John Boyega as a stormtrooper, as well as some familiar ones, such as Hans Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewie (Peter Mayhew) that will be seen in the film, which is set to come to theaters on December 18, 2015,

This third installment of the Star Wars series is predicted to be quite successful in theaters in December. According to CBS Money Watch, managing editor of IMDB.com, Keith Simanton, expects the film to gross $225 million during opening weekend. If this movie does earn that much, it will break the record of longtime record holder Marvel’s “The Avengers.” It seems to be expected that the movie will do well as the first installment of the series grossed more than $1.1 billion since its release back in the 1970s.

The second trailer was released on April 17, 2015 and it was for “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which has earned over 21 million views on YouTube in just four days.

For a film that will be released in 2016, this was a pretty lengthy trailer. Most teaser trailers of this sort usually last maybe a minute and hint at certain characters and themes, but this trailer goes beyond that and actually lasts for a full 2:13 minutes and reveals a bit more then just characters.

“Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” follows the events of 2013s “Man of Steel” as society questions whether Superman is an actual hero. Henry Cavill as Superman is seen early on in the trailer while Ben Affleck as Batman does not make an appearance until a full minute into the trailer. For a while the trailer feels more like a sequel to Superman with Batman thrown into the mix then a gearing up for a Justice League movie.

The third trailer released this weekend was for 20th Century Fox’s “Fantastic Four” on April 19, 2015, which has earned 2.8 million views. This movie is a reboot of the original “Fantastic Four” movie from 2005.

Although all of the familiar “Fantastic Four” characters and their powers are still the same, (example Reed Richard still becomes Mr. Fantastic and has the ability of becoming elastic) the origins of these characters change. The 2005 movie has the four main characters earning their powers by travelling to space.

In this newly released full length trailer, the second trailer for the reboot, it is revealed that Reed Richard and his team, including Johnny and Sue Storm and Ben Grimm, teleport to an alternate universe where they are altered physically to become the Fantastic Four and must face a once friend turned enemy.

The “Fantastic Four” film in 2005 received a 27 percent ranking from Rotten Tomatoes and 5.7 out of 10 stars from IMDB, so it will be interesting to see if the reboot will be more successful then the previous two films.
