According to progressillinois.com, schools in the state of Illinois are facing hard times after recent budget cuts. Along with losing many staff members, arts and music programs are being cut to make ends meet. Fellow Cardinal students respond to the latest current event in arts news.

Tiona Mouton, senior

“Well personally I would be devastated seeing as how I’m a Graphics Arts Major. Art is important to me and is another way of expressing myself.”

Simone Harshaw, junior

“I think it’s sad.  Many art programs give kids an outlet for expression, and creativity, and teaches them to be innovative and unique. Taking this away, takes away opportunities for kids who may see the arts as a passion, especially if those kid’s families aren’t financially able to pay for acting, music, drawing, etc lessons outside of school. In which, those school programs would have been those kids’ only means to receive such.”

Kylie Burkhardt, sophomore

“I believe that it is wrong to cut the art department in schools in order to save money. I find that having an art department in schools is extremely beneficial for students and learning. Art is a unique and great way to express yourself and without the ability to do that would be unfortunate.”
