Chipotle: Stocks are down, prices will go up

As of late, it seems as if Chipotle has it all. As a result, Chipotle has seen its fair share of success. Nonetheless, on Tuesday the Chipotle stock dropped more than 4% during after-hours trading.

Chipotle might have the right idea, but they are missing one key ingredient: their infamous pork topping. In January, the company chose to remove this item from its menu, despite its popularity. Chipotle spokesperson Chris Arnold, spoke to ABC News about their controversial menu choice.

“This is fundamentally an animal welfare decision, and is rooted in our unwillingness to compromise our standards where animal welfare is concerned. The issues are mostly related to violations for the housing of pigs, Arnold said. As part of its “Responsibly Raised standard,” Chipotle demands that suppliers raise the animals in humane conditions with access to the outdoors instead of tight pens.”

Interestingly enough, Chipotle’s pork shortage has influenced its performance in the stock market. In an article from CNN titled, “Chipotle Prices are Going UpChipotle’s CFO has recognized the problem, but still stands by the company’s choice.

“Many [customers]have decided to hold out until carnitas returns,” said Chipotle CFO John Hartung during a call with analysts to discuss the results. We are as confident as ever that we made the right decision to suspend a pork supplier based on our principles.” Those working at the company are working on both alternatives and solutions to the problem. For instance, in place of the pork they now have a tofu option. Chipotle hopes to offer pork to their customers once again sometime in the fall of 2015.

Additionally, Chipotle consumers might be disappointed yet again when they are faced with an increase in price. In “Chipotle Prices are Going Up, CFO Hartung acknowledges and defends the price increase by stating, “”We lose money any time someone comes in and thinks about getting chicken and gets steak instead.”

Overall, Chipotle lovers can expect pork back on the menu soon. If there is one thing Chipotle lovers can appreciate it is the company’s commitment to their standards, principles, and ultimately, quality food.
