It was a beautiful day for a football game Saturday, Sept. 26 at North Central’s Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The home stands were filled with excitement, ready to see their Cardinals bounce back from their Week 2 overtime loss to No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

North Central lived up to the hype with a high scoring shootout against #5 Wesley College. The Wolverines edged out the Cardinals in the final seconds of the game 50-49 due to the fifth lead change of the day on a last second touchdown and 2-point conversion by the Wesley offense.

North Central got hot with 6:32 left in the second quarter when Austin Breunig capped off an explosive five play, 80-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Bruenig’s run gave the Cardinals momentum to score 21 unanswered points including two touchdown runs by senior running back Matt Randolph.

The Wolverines answered back quickly and made a run of their own starting with 9:13 left in the third quarter scoring 28 straight points including three rushing touchdowns by Wesley quarterback Joe Callahan.

Cardinals bounced back nicely with their final two scores with a touchdown pass to sophomore Austin Ulmer and a rushing touchdown by freshman Justin Hunniford before Wesley took command with a touchdown and two-point conversion with seven seconds left on the clock.
