Halloween is not for offending people

There are many great Halloween costume ideas out there. While some might be considered funny, other costumes are not. Don’t wear blackface. For example, as a Caucasian male, it would be extremely frowned upon to use blackface in order to dress up as our 2020 presidential candidate Kanye West, or Bill Cosby. Avoiding racism is important; however, it isn’t the only factor to consider. Halloween is rarely the time to be edgy, especially in a politically correct world.

Another tasteless idea would be to dress up as former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle who recently was in trouble for having relations with several minors. Honestly, what would be proven by wearing this costume?

Wearing the jersey of a convicted professional sports player is another popular yet somewhat tasteless choice. Political awareness is almost expected during Halloween. Parodying religious figures is a touchy subject as well. It might be a wise decision to avoid a religious zombie parody.

A retailer like Walmart, which sells about 40,000 different costumes, may find offending others difficult to avoid. The company most recently received flack for selling a child size Israel Soldier costume.
So what other options are left? Who can I dress up as with no repercussions?

Here are three ideas for a parody costume:
1. Go as a zombified character from a popular movie.
2. Parody an occupation.
3. Parody Internet Culture (different from regular culture ex. Netflix and Chill).

Couples’ costumes can sometimes be offensive too. So here are five couples’ costumes to avoid wearing on Halloween:
1.Steve Irwin and a stingray.
2. A drone and a Doctors Without Borders hospital.
3. An ISIS member and a prisoner.
4. Two halves of flight MH370.
5. A dentist and a dead lion.
