Weighing in on the Target boycott

If you have not already seen on social media, Target has changed some of its bathroom policies. This new policy allows transgender people use of whatever bathroom they identify with, regardless of the gender on their birth certificate.

As a result, nearly 750,000 people have signed a petition to boycott Target.

Whether you are boycotting Target or supporting the change, here are the reasons the policy has nothing to do with non-trans people.

  1. One of the current arguments is that people do not feel safe sharing bathrooms with people who are transgender. Some of these people feel that it puts their kids in danger of sexual predators. Unfortunately, the magical unlocked door between predators and your children is not a force field. Anyone can walk through those doors at any time no matter what the sign says.
  2. Another argument is that this policy is taking away children’s innocence, and that some parents don’t want their children exposed to transgender people. The thing about being transgender is that you most likely won’t know if someone is or is not. The last time I was in Target’s bathroom, no one was walking around naked and stalls were still there.
  3. The third argument is that again, this opens the door for men to abuse the policy and look at women in the bathroom. My question is, why is this only directed toward men? People always are quick to point out men for being the sexual predators toward women, forgetting that a sexual predator can have any sexual preference, thus making the argument invalid. A sexual predator can be a man or woman, looking to attack a man or a woman.

I think people are forgetting that it’s a public bathroom and in the end, you have a choice to use it or not. Target is not forcing you to use their facilities.

If you don’t feel comfortable sharing a bathroom with transgender person, so be it. Use the bathroom before you go to Target. You don’t have to accept social equality, but you surely can’t stop it.
