After a violent weekend marked by the destruction of a U.N. aid convoy attempting to deliver supplies to the Syrian city of Aleppo and a pair of bombings in New York and New Jersey, a wary world came together Wednesday to honor the International Day of Peace.
As has been custom since its first observance 34 years ago, each celebration carries with it a unique theme. This year’s theme is sustainability, specifically the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that were adapted by all 193 member states during last year’s historic summit in New York City.
These 17 goals represent an ambitious 15-year world agenda that seeks to rid the world of the issues that continue to lead to conflict. Such issues include eradicating poverty and hunger; guaranteeing all people access to health care, clean water and education; and empowering women through gender equality.
The environment is also a major focus, with counties seeking to create sustainable cities, and protect life both on land and below water.
In a statement commemorating the day, U.N. Secretary-General Ban-Ki-moon urged further global cooperation: “Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind.”
