The force behind The Union: Whitney Roberts

At NCC, The Union is a for-profit business that has a show once a week. It’s one of the only student organizations that actually makes revenue from ticket sales.

Whitney Roberts, assistant director for civic engagement, said, “I think it’s different than a lot of things on campus or being an advisor for a lot of groups on campus because there is this component about being a public-facing venue.”

Throughout the course of event planning there are some challenges with the process. Roberts said, “You’re running major events every week, and just with that you run into all kinds of logistical obstacles, so whether that’s having to do with an artist, or if it’s students.”

Additionally, The Union relies heavily on student volunteers. “For me, it’s important that our campus departments and student organizations seek to partner on events like this,” said Roberts. “Taking the opportunity for different organizations to say we want to be a part of this work also is really important.”
