What does it take to be a dual-sport athlete?

Emonte Logan ’17 is a football player and wrestler at North Central College — and he’s pretty successful at both.

He finished the 2015-2016 wrestling season with a 17-7 overall record and placed second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship, and fourth in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships.

In the 2016 football season, he recorded 25 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, and a sack, and was named Second Team All-CCIW at defensive tackle in a season which the Cardinals finished the regular season undefeated, won the CCIW trophy and made it to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Being a dual-sport athlete is time consuming, but the toughest part about it for Logan is transitioning between sports. “The transition is probably the hardest thing, going from football to wrestling every year,” says Logan. “Getting in shape for wrestling is the biggest thing.”

Actually, the time consumption aspect of it does not bother him. “I hate having free time; staying busy is a big thing for me,” he says.

As for the transition and weight cutting for wrestling, it isn’t too long of a process for Logan.

“After about two weeks of wrestling I cut down 15 pounds and then I’m in shape,” he says.

Logan didn’t start out his collegiate career doing both sports. “I initially came here just to play football, but after one year sitting out and going to some of the meets here and going back to my high school,” he says.

“Some of my coaches got onto me about me being able to potentially win a national title. I kind of got convinced by coaches and me missing the sport,” he says.

Logan is often asked which sport he likes better, but he says there really is no answer for that.

“I get that question from literally everyone that knows me,” he says. “There are different things I like about them. In football, I like the team aspect of it and in wrestling, I like the individual aspect of it. I can’t choose. Both are things I take with me every day of my life.”
