The Sigma Tau Delta English honor society held its annual Victorian Feast on Friday, Nov. 8 to celebrate some of the greatest literary authors and their masterpieces.
This year, the society members did something different than they had in the past; they instituted an optional dress code.
The attendees, those who are majoring or minoring in English, had the opportunity to dress up as their favorite literary author, character, or a particular literary time period. Some costumes included Emily Dickinson, the Great Gatsby, Sherlock Holmes, the Cat in the Hat, Juliet Capulet, and Alice in Wonderland.
More than 20 students attended this event, along with a number of professors from the English department.
Students were offered appetizers of sourdough bread and cheese, meatballs with dipping sauce, and apple cider and enjoyed playing board games — like the Sherlock Holmes detective game — before the big feast.
When the time came for the dinner to be served, students’ eyes gleamed at the typical Thanksgiving dinner that the inducted members of Sigma Tau Delta prepared.
Everyone feasted on turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, cornbread and apple pie for dessert.
Most students chose to eat in the grand dining room in Smith Hall, which was decorated with place cards of some of the greatest writers of all time, such as Langston Hughes and Charles Dickens.
Then it was time to induct the newest member of the English society, junior Tiffany Sulester.
Prospective members who are eligible to be inducted into Sigma Tau Delta have the option of being inducted in winter term or during the end of the spring term on Honors Day.
Sulester stood in front of the living room with a rose in her hand while the president, vice president and secretary of the society spoke of the history of Sigma Tau Delta, the requirements one must meet to be inducted, and finally, the pledge that members take to become part of the society.
Sulester then became the first inductee of the English society for 2013.
