As many seniors at North Central College know, the hunt to collect money for the class gift to the college is on.
This year the class gift is not one specific item. It’s a donation to a specific department or student organization.
Many students prefer deciding where their donation goes; athletics, the library, WONC, etc. Senior Carrie Pavlacka said, “I gave to education because it was such a big part of my time at North Central.”
The 2014 Class Gift Committee began collecting money during week four of the fall term. Senior and committee member, Joe Czaja, said the group has “meetings once a week since we started to figure out how to make more money.”
Recent statistics say that 26 percent of the senior class has given to the cause and many are continuing to give as winter term comes to an end.
In order to obtain more money, the committee collected donations from students at sporting events and Kaufman Dining Hall. You might have seen them sitting at tables, collecting money, or handing out information about donating.
On Feb. 27, the committee hosted a philanthropy event to show thanks to the previous faculty and staff who have given back.
In honor of the event, the campus displayed big blue tags that the faculty and staff wrote on saying why they are “#Allin4NC.”
The committee does face its challenges, however. “Many people think their tuition is enough to give to the school,” Czaja said, “but they don’t realize how much North Central has done.” The committee overcomes this issue by making it personal for students.
Czaja continued by saying, “so many before you have given so you can do what you do. Why not give to those coming after?”
If you are a senior at NCC, make sure to visit one of the ten committee members to give them your contribution. If you are not a senior, expect your fellow classmates to be asking soon.
