It’s Alcohol Awareness Week at North Central College, and what better way to celebrate alcohol awareness than with a feud; a friendly feud of course. Tuesday, Dyson Wellness Center hosted “Friendly Feud,” a take on the Family Feud game show yet adapted to Alcohol Awareness Week. Students Meghan Pickett ’15 and Ben Redmond ’15 hosted the event in upper WAC. Although the turnout was small, Pickett and Redmond did their best to emphasize educational components of the game. According to Pickett, the group surveyed 100 people. One of the tougher questions on the game was an alternative name for alcohol. “Booze” was the guess between the three contestants playing, which was the number one answer receiving 30 votes in the year-old survey. The game was a great opportunity to learn about alcohol safety. Some of the tips that were offered about drinking responsibly and attending parties included knowing your limit and using “the buddy system.”
To elaborate on the “buddy system,” these are ways to help your friend if they are too intoxicated, including monitoring their sleeping and calling 911 if they are showing signs of alcohol poisoning. Some of these tips may be seemingly obvious; however, there are still a few symptoms that can fly under the radar. For example, those who have not been exposed to a drinking atmosphere might not realize that bloodshot and tired eyes are a major physical indication that a person is highly intoxicated.
“Friendly Feud” also provided information on alternatives to the college drinking atmosphere, as well as handing out prizes representing these alternatives. In the game, the party alternative category listed The Union, NCC’s off-campus music venue, as the number one response for an alternative to drinking at parties. The second most popular answer was the CUAB Saturday Night Event. Some of the prizes included miniature Frisbees, old promotional t-shirts, stress balls, Zen Gardens and sun glasses.
