Students at North Central College cannot stop talking about how much fun they have playing intramural sports.
With a wide variety of sports to choose from, including traditional favorites such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball, to non-traditional options like ultimate Frisbee, wiffleball, and dodgeball, there seems to be a sport for everyone.
Sophomore Adam Holstine, who has participated in nine intramural sports, has had nothing but positive experiences from the program.
“I love everything about playing intramural sports,” said Holstine. “I love getting to compete in a variety of sports with my best friends and have lots of laughs while doing it.”
“There is no better study break at night than going down to the football field to play ultimate Frisbee under the lights or play basketball in the big gym.”
Each term offers five sports, allowing students to choose the right sport for them. All it takes to join is a team and a small fee.
Even though these sports are “just for fun,” don’t think there is a lack of competition. Games get very competitive and there are even Championships for each sport.
Holstine and fellow sophomore Devin Holota, roommates and intramural teammates, know just how competitive these sports get as they fought their way to the Ultimate Frisbee Championships, coming away with a victory.
“My favorite part of intramurals this year was winning the Championship game for Ultimate Frisbee,” said Holota. “It was great to be with my friends and share the moment with them.”
For some students, intramurals are a great way to continue playing the sport they love when they can no longer play competitively. After sustaining an injury and unable to play varsity soccer, junior Lauren Rose Collianni decided to give intramurals a try. Her team made it to the playoffs, a highlight for her intramural sports’ experience.
“My favorite moment from playing intramural soccer was going into the playoffs, because there was so much excitement and energy,” said Collianni.
Even current Cardinal athletes enjoy intramural sports. Caley Michalak, a junior on the women’s soccer team, enjoys the opportunity to continue playing year round. “I decided to play intramurals to have fun, spend time with friends, and to continue playing soccer in the offseason,” said Michalak.
From trying a new sport to making new friends, to staying in shape in the offseason and everything in between, the popularity of this popular campus activity is growing.
