The North Central College Cardinals extended their winning streak to five games with 1-0 wins over the Concordia University of Chicago on Wednesday and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday, only to have it broken on Sunday against Webster University.
In Wednesday night’s contest, it was not long before starting junior striker Jessica De Jong scored the first and only goal of the game with 34 minutes left in the first half. The Cardinals kept pressure on the Cougars and with the help of solid defense, secured the win. Junior goalkeeper Nicki Seiton remained strong in goal making two crucial saves.
De Jong continued to show her strengths on offense with the game-winning goal in the second half on Saturday, leading the Cardinals to their fifth straight victory. Seiton blocked nine shots and recorded her fourth shutout in a row, moving into the second place spot on the all-time list for career shutouts.
But on Sunday, the winning streak came to an end as the Cardinals fell to the Gorloks 3-2. De Jong got things started early in the game for the offense and sophomore Emily Gaither added one of her own. The Gorloks had things tied up going into halftime but scored in the 71st minute to hand the Cardinals their second loss of the season.
Head Coach Bonnie Young and her squad are currently 5-2 on the season. The next game will be a non-conference matchup on the road at the University of Illinois-Chicago on Sept. 26.
