Get the full story on upcoming book-to-film adaptations

It seems that book-to-movie adaptations aren’t going away, so here are some of the books to read before they make their way to theaters in 2016.

The 5th Wave
In January, we saw the release of “The 5th Wave.” Based on the novel by Rick Yancey, the movie follows a 16-year-old girl, played by Chloë Grace Moretz, struggling to survive an alien invasion that causes everything from earthquakes and tsunamis to disease after being separated from her family.

The Choice
In February, “The Choice” hits theaters as Nicholas Sparks’s 11th book-to-movie adaptation. The romantic drama stars Teresa Palmer and Benjamin Walker as Gabby and Travis, neighbors in a small town who end up in a relationship that is tested at every turn. A car crash that leaves Gabby in a coma causes Travis to question what to do next.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” based on the book by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, is the story of 19th-century England, where a plague causes the dead to come back to life. Elizabeth Bennet, played by Lily James, is a martial arts and weaponry master who must join forces with Mr. Darcy, played Sam Riley, a handsome and arrogant gentleman. The two must put aside their differences in order to battle the zombies and save their country.

How to Be Single
“How to Be Single” is a romantic comedy starring Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Alison Brie and Leslie Mann. Johnson’s character, Alice, is trying to navigate her way through the New York City dating scene with the help of her friend, played by Wilson. This movie is based on the book by Liz Tuccillo, co-author of “He’s Just Not That into You” and produced by Drew Barrymore.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” is based on the novel “The Taliban Shuffle,” written by Kim Baker, who wrote this as a memoir about her time as a journalist in Afghanistan and Pakistan in the early 2000s. The movie will be in theaters this March and stars Tina Fey, who is also one of the producers.

Allegiant
The popular “Divergent” series will see its third installment, “Allegiant,” hit theaters in mid-March. This movie, based on the Veronica Roth books, has the original actors, including Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort. Tris, Four and their allies must go beyond the wall that surrounds Chicago, and must try to survive the battle that threatens the human race, as it is know. This movie only covers half of the book, and fans will see a fourth installment to the series, and a part two to this movie, in 2017, called “Ascendent.”

Alice Through the Looking Glass

In May, Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp will reprise their roles as Alice and the Mad Hatter in the sequel to the 2010 film “Alice in Wonderland.” This sequel, “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” is the story of what happens to Alice six months after the original story ended as she meets more characters. The movie includes music by Danny Elfman and is directed by James Bobin.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Harry Potter fans, rejoice: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” based on the book by J. K. Rowling, comes out in November. It follows the adventures of New York writer, Newt Scamander, in a community of wizards and witches 70 years before Harry Potter reads Scamander’s textbook in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” at Hogwarts. The film is being directed by David Yates, the same man who directed the last four Harry Potter films.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
In December, director Tim Burton’s film “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” hits theaters, based on the young-adult horror novel by Ransom Riggs. The cast includes Eva Green, Samuel L. Jackson and Asa Butterfield. The movie is based on a teenager named Jacob and his exploration of an abandoned orphanage near Wales following a family tragedy.

This year seems to be the time for book-to-movie adaptations, many of them featuring actors and directors who are well known. So, go to the bookstore and read up on some of these titles so you will be ready once they hit theaters.
