Adam Winters (’18) was crowned Mr. NCC two weeks ago. This event is an on-campus pageant for male students in which it is decided who is worthy of the title of Mr. NCC. This included a group dance featuring the contestants, a lip sync competition and a question for each contestant.
Winters had to step outside of his comfort zone to participate in the Mr. NCC competition, but it proved to be worthwhile.
“It got me out of my comfort zone and I met a lot of nice people doing it,” said Winters. “Usually I’m not one to make myself look goofy in front of others and I’m kind of self-conscious.”
Winters did not plan on entering this competition at first, but he ultimately decided to go for it, saying that it helped to have a friend alongside him.
“Originally, I didn’t want to, but I found out Blake Huddlestun, one of my best friends, was nominated for it,” said Winters. “I was just kind of like, ‘Why not? It would be a fun experience.’”
For the lip sync portion, Winters threw it back to 2003. “I chose ‘Roses by Outkast,’” said Winters. “I dressed up as Andre 3000 and tried to act how he did in the music video.” This performance may have won Winters the competition. “I really loved the lip syncing part,” said Winters. “It was fun trying to act like Andre 3000.”
Winters said he did not have to practice much for the event, but most of the work went into the group dance. “The most practice I put in was for the group dance; I practiced it once with my friend Mason, I practiced it again with Mason and Blake, and there were two group rehearsals,” Winters said.
The question Winters was asked was: “What has been your favorite class so far at NCC?” “I replied with Landmark Discoveries in the Scientific World because it was discussion based, interesting, and it didn’t have a ton of homework,” said Winters.
Winters thoroughly enjoyed the contest, but he does not plan on defending his crown. “I would participate next year, but I would rather judge,” said Winters. “I want to be a part of it, but not front and center.”
Win or lose, he enjoyed the event, but winning added to his enjoyment. “I was very excited to win because I’m a pretty competitive person,” said Winters. “Overall it was a really fun experience and winning was the cherry on top.”
