Saying farewell to the senior editorial staff

0

This year, The Chronicle has seen its ups and downs but at the end of the day, any college newspaper will go as its seniors go. Nine staff members will graduate on June 11 and the staff will never be the same.

From the guidance of last year’s senior leadership in Stephanie Snyder and David Sutton, this group of seniors has taken the journalism program to new heights. The reputation of The Chronicle is something that has been held sacred for more than 140 years now, and this group did not sell themselves short on one single detail.

Each senior is responsible for something truly beautiful that this paper has provided to the North Central College community.

The award-winning artwork that senior design editor Taylor Mithelman continues to create with every edition of The Chronicle is something that has helped brand the newspaper for years to come.

Senior forum editor Jordan Bolker has brought article ideas to the table that challenged expectations and highlighted some of the school’s toughest issues.

Senior Hannah Bevis epitomized her position as sports editor by coming up with innovative ideas like the Cardinal Clash and took staff members for a spin at Handlebars in Naperville.

Back cover and sports photos now (finally) have a credit line by a North Central student because of the work done by the creative photo genius, senior photo editor Xanic Lopez.

Senior design editor Luke Langlois has led his ever-growing staff of young designers to be patient with content and create a layout for The Chronicle that we are sincerely proud of weeks three, six and nine of every term.

Jordan Redman is our senior marketing manager who seems to enjoy the dirty work that goes into every issue, always helping in every way he can, posting The Chronicle name on every corner of campus.

In case you have not been to the ncclinked.com website recently, it has been given a makeover thanks to the work by senior web editor Shane Hoffman, who is also responsible for posting every article to the site.

Senior copy editor and advertising manager MacKenzie Putnal has been the glue that holds this staff together, using all of her many talents to do everything asked of her, regardless of when or where.

Co-managing editor, senior Crystal Madrigal, is a prime example of a “leader by example” as she has shown our newspaper the importance of every detail on design, photo, or content editing.

Last but surely not least, senior editor in chief Haylie Berkland, who recently won the Academic Excellence in Journalism award for North Central, is what leadership in journalism at The Chronicle is all about.

This news organization is something that benefits every student involved, creating portfolio opportunities for writers and layout designers alike, but that is not what highlights the talents and personalities that these people have brought to the table each and every week for The Chronicle.

The personalities that we are letting go of at this year’s graduation will not soon be forgotten. The time spent in the newsroom on publication night will forever be worth the smiles that were shared and the memories that were created.

As a junior managing editor, these seniors welcomed me with open arms and showed the same respect that any manager would be thrilled to see, but I am not writing this as the managing editor of The Chronicle, I’m writing this as a letter to my friends. My crazy, ultra-talented friends whose futures are brighter than the colors on our cover.

Thank you, seniors.
