Having spent three months in England, I’ve picked up a few tips on how to upgrade my style from American student to European student (the UK hasn’t officially left the EU yet, OK?). It’s actually really easy to create a more polished look for class or hanging out with friends with these six simple tips:
- Swap your leggings out for jeans. It’s rare here to see a student wearing leggings, or any athletic clothes for that matter, to class. Finding a great pair of versatile jeans can elevate your look from uber-casual to daytime chic. They can even be black if you have trouble parting with your very comfortable leggings.
- Layers, layers, layers. This is almost a no-brainer, but layering can be a great way to add polish to a simple look. Try layering a silky tank top under your (or even over if you’re adventurous) favorite fall flannel. For guys, layering a sweater over a button-down shirt and topping that off with a sport jacket will make the ladies wonder where you learned such great style.
- Basics are your BFF. I cannot stress enough how important great basics are in any wardrobe, especially one of a student abroad. Your basics can be used to create so many rad looks and are so versatile. Statement pieces aren’t as popular in Europe just because they lack practicality, but accessories are a great way to elevate those basics. Plus, they don’t take up as much space in a suitcase if you’re traveling.
- Find your go-to outfit. Finding an outfit formula that works for you makes getting dressed so much easier. Many students here have worn similarly styled outfits that use different pieces. When you have a go-to style that looks great and makes you feel great, it’s easy to get ready and out the door for class.
- Do your hair and makeup. This does not mean full-out glam or an hour spent styling your hair, but adding even the smallest amount of mascara or pulling your hair into a quick and stylish pony can pull together a look.
- You can still be comfortable. Comfort is always key in pulling off any look whether it be casual or glam. I’ve seen plenty of girls wear a fur vest to class but keep it casual and street chic by wearing a pair of Stan Smith sneakers or a simple pair of booties. You can also try layering a leather jacket over a hoodie to create an interesting (and warm and comfortable) look for class.
Getting dressed should be a fun process and completely stress-free, so these tips are perfect for creating a polished and stylish look for any occasion. European style is always a source of inspiration for many people, and it’s easy to see why after spending almost every day with fashion students. These tips have helped me personally and I hope they can help you, too, as we prepare for the holidays and the start of a new year!
