Jessica Vasquez: an aid in ending sexual violence

According to a CNN survey, 23 percent of college women report sexual violence. Jessica Vasquez wants to make sure North Central students don’t become a part of that statistic.

Vasquez, the new Dyson Wellness Center sexual violence and harassment coordinator, arrived at North Central on Feb. 2, 2017, to begin her new position. Vasquez has a number of years of experience with sexual violence and raising awareness. Her experience will help students feel comfortable in coming to her to discuss any sexual violence they may experience.

Being confidential over a delicate subject, it would give students the chance to express themselves and feel safe while speaking about their experience with sexual violence. If a person experiences sexual assault, Vasquez helps student-victims decide whether they would want to file reports with North Central’s campus safety or even the Naperville Police Department.

Title IX Coordinator, Rebecca Gordon, believes that the North Central campus approaches all sexual violence reports with confidentiality.

“The strength of our campus provides advocacy for those who experience sexual violence and harassment,” said Gordon.

North Central’s commitment to raising awareness of sexual violence is a welcome change from other college campuses that don’t have the resources for students to report their assault. Vasquez has come to continue that commitment and be sure that every student has a resource when it comes to discussing sexual violence.
