On a rather fitting April 23, the 453rd birthday of William Shakespeare, dozens gathered in Koten Chapel to celebrate the life of Dr. Sara Eaton, one of North Central’s most notable English academics and professors to date.
The chapel was brightly lit and a bust of Shakespeare rested at the front of the room; the two combined for a fitting embodiment of Dr. Eaton’s spirit. Attendants included fellow faculty, former students and close friends and family.
The celebration began with a brief opening statement by The Rev. Howard Mueller, followed by a back-and-forth between shared memories of Dr. Eaton by friends, and her favorite classical pieces including Mozart, Morley and Bach.
The memories ranged from hilarious with a dash of crude, to fond and heartfelt; few eyes were dry by the closing music. A reception was held afterward, where attendees gathered to greet one another and share their personal encounters with Dr. Eaton, who touched so many in her 27 years at NCC.
