“I was thinking of those who cannot survive the brutalities of our rotten economies,” said Chilean-American writer Daniel Borzutzky of his book “The Performance of Becoming Human.” The book won him the 2016 National Book Award for poetry. This award is given by the National Book Foundation, a foundation that celebrates American literature.
“The book draws hemispheric connections between the US and Latin America, specifically border and immigration politics, economic disparity, political violence and the disturbing rhetoric of capitalism and bureaucracies,” said NCC English professor and poet, Dr. Rebecca Stafford. “For Borzutsky, to become human is to navigate these borders.”
Borzutzky will be visiting North Central’s Meiley-Swallow Theatre on Oct. 4. He will read from his award-winning book as well as sell and sign copies following the reading. While picking up a copy of his book is not free of charge, the event is.
This is the first event in the visiting writer series for the 2017-2018 academic year.
