Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globes acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement struck a chord like nothing else at the award show. And after the icon walked off stage, many made the assumption that she could be floating the idea of a 2020 presidential campaign.
The rumors did not go unnoticed. Even President Donald Trump chimed in that he would beat her in a presidential race if it came to it. The rumors are also gaining traction as members of Oprah’s team are saying that she is “considering” the idea of running for president.
For many, it sounds like another thrilling adventure for the American political system to go on. While I do think Oprah may make for a better president than our current commander-in-chief — I don’t think running for president would be the best call. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see a woman break through that glass ceiling. I just don’t think Oprah is the woman for the job.
Her background extends from talk show host, actor and now running a multibillion-dollar company with her name plastered across it. Sound familiar? While her political ideologies are far different from President Trump’s, her level of experience in government is very similar to his was — zero. Which calls to question, what in Oprah’s storied career would prepare her to be a better president than the current man in office?
Taking a break from politicians at the highest stage in government was a nice and a good joke, but it’s time to get serious again. It’s time to put a politician back in office who has the educational background and the political experience to help lead our nation in an unprecedentedly complicated era.
