North Central’s theater department performed 2018’s senior musical, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” from Feb. 28 through March 4.
Love is something everyone desires, but seemingly very few are lucky to receive. Everyone has those awkward first date stories or knows of someone in a loveless marriage or just struggling to find romance in the first place. North Central’s production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” highlights every aspect of love in all the forms it can take.
Rather than a traditional musical narrative, “I Love You, You’re Perfect…” features a series of skits with a cast of six actors that each assume different roles as either boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, lovers or hopeless singles. Each skit tackles a theme when it comes to love, such as the awkwardness of a first date and wanting to skip ahead to the second date or even the morning after.
Regardless if you have been in those scenarios, everyone is bound to relate as the cast pokes fun at the social construct of dating and all the strings attached to it. The musical also succeeds in inclusivity, especially in the second act in which queer couples were represented and shown to be dealing with the same problems every couple does.
As the title suggests, you may love someone and believe that they’re perfect for you, but everyone has their flaws that might need to be changed. One flaw in particular may be that your significant other is talking too much about or has an unhealthy obsession with golf.
“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” offers something for everyone to find humor in. Whether young or old, love can seem like an endless series of trial and error as we look for our soulmates or keep the spark in a marriage.
