It’s again time to exercise your civic pride and cast your ballot for North Central College Student Governing Association representatives for the 2018-19 school year. The digital polls are open from Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 20; so check your student email or sift through your endless Blackboard notifications to find the ballots.
Students are set to vote on seven officer positions, including student life officer, treasurer, secretary, academic life senator(s), student life senator(s) and, of course, SGA president. This year’s candidates for president are Ivan Bohorquez, ’19 and Abby Moravek, ’19.
Moravek currently serves as SGA’s marketing liaison and marketing intern for Chartwells, NCC’s dining service, which sits near the top of her agenda if elected. “The dining service has come a long way since the beginning of this year, but I still feel that there is still room for improvement,” said Moravek. “One major accomplishment I would like to make is to build relationships with local restaurants for student dining discounts.”
Bohorquez would also focus his attention on improving dining and, along with Moravek also cited the need to improve the commuter experience. He also hopes to make North Central more eco-friendly. While not an active member of SGA, he believes that his knowledge and experience in business will be conducive to effectively running SGA. “I’m a triple major in accounting, finance and economics,” said Bohorquez. “The studies of these areas make me more aware of how a business or organization would run on a day-to-day basis.”
On the other hand, Moravek is confident that her perspective and experience working with different NCC organizations make her a fit for the presidency. “Being a transfer student, I have a pair of fresh eyes around campus. I am a commuter student, which allows me to understand the needs and concerns of commuters,” she said. “Being the marketing intern for the dining services on campus, I interact with residents daily. Also, I have planned and executed different events at various dining locations for all students.”
Despite Moravek’s SGA experience and near-ubiquitous campaign flyers across campus, Bohorquez feels that he could affect real change on campus if elected. “I would put my best effort in making a difference and leaving behind a legacy for other students to reach for,” he said. On a lighter note, Bohorquez also mentioned that he “thought it would be cool to run for president of SGA and I believe that I could learn a lot from it.”
If once you load the polls, you can’t see yourself voting for either of the candidates on the ballots — there is always a write-in option for others hoping for a Hail Mary. The election rules do stipulate that a write-in candidate would have to receive at least 75 votes to win a seat as a senator, 100 votes for student life/academic life/treasurer/secretary and a whopping 150 votes to win the presidency on write-ins; however, you wouldn’t have to worry about any sort of electoral college fiasco.
