“Unlocks, unlocks and unlocks” is the answer Officer James Womack gave when asked what he spends the most time doing during his day shift.
Officer Womack had wanted to be a police officer when he was a child, but things hadn’t gone exactly how he’d planned. After bouncing around at a few other colleges, he finally ended up at North Central and he couldn’t be happier about it. “I really enjoy how involved everyone is here, it’s really refreshing,” he said.
Student officer Francisco Seguerro shared the same sentiment, saying he enjoyed the compact size of the college and how he thought it contributed to the students’ involvement. Student officer Seguerro came to North Central only a few months ago, but he had experience in enforcement from his time in the military and the switch to campus safety was a natural choice. He’s working on his computer science degree and hopes to go into cryptology to eventually help fight cyber terrorism.
A few of the officers shared some of the most memorable experience they’ve had on campus. Officer Bill Fagenbaum remembered that he “was responding to a battery call at Naper Place back when it was a part of the College and the Naperville police had already talked to the victim. Apparently, someone had hit a pedestrian in the head with a chicken nugget from a third story window. By the time I got there, the victim had left, so there wasn’t much we could do. Weirdest call I’ve ever gotten.”
Officer David Tansey has plans past being a North Central campus safety officer. “You know, I’d like to be a cop. That’s a goal I’ve had since starting campus security. I never really had a desire to be one as a kid but now that’s my aim. Not sure if I’d be able to pass the physical; I’m partially blind in this one,” he said as he pointed to his right eye. But working at North Central wasn’t simply a stepping stone. “This is actually my favorite campus security gig I’ve had and I plan on staying for as long as I can, as long as it’s feasible, you know,” he said.
