Intramurals can be an outlet for students

Ever felt overwhelmed and stressed by school and homework? Or like you needed an outlet and needed to get more involved around campus or just in life in general? Well, maybe you never thought about joining an intramural sports team before.

Here at North Central — and most colleges — there are intramural sports programs that are available for every student. Some sports that students can get involved in during the school year include soccer, basketball, flag football and volleyball.

You don’t have to be a student-athlete here at North Central to participate in intramurals because anyone and everyone can join. One way to get a team together is to simply gather up some friends, or try reaching out to new people and really getting involved and by making new connections. And yes, there are intramurals for both men and women.

Participating in these intramural programs are very beneficial to the students in many different ways. First, the health benefits: being active really helps people stay in shape and stay fit.

Another benefit is the social networking part of it, like meeting new people by interacting with teammates and opponents. Plus, it’s a great stress reliever because lots of college students don’t participate in collegiate sports, so this is an outlet that allows them to do something they love and do it competitively.

North Central students made it abundantly clear they enjoyed their intramural experience.“Playing in intramurals has really helped me out by keeping me in shape and really connecting people,” said Joshua Simmons, ’20.

Gio Girone, ’21, echoed that, explaining “Competing in intramurals is fun. Honestly, I feel like if you have a chance to do, you should definitely take full advantage of that opportunity and do it.”
