After a brief hiatus, NCC’s gospel choir, Voices of Praise, has been reestablished with the help of Mikel Mays, ’22. “I really had a passion to bring it back once I heard of the stories and the things they did,” said Mays.
Mays hopes to build a happy community, strengthen relationships and “ultimately come together and sing praises to the Lord.” Currently, there are 15 committed members of the group, but they are looking to grow. Anyone of any major is welcome to join, no audition needed.
Every practice begins in Koten Chapel with a group prayer, announcements are given and then they go right into singing. A piano player is featured at practices for the group to sing with. In addition to working on vocals, they also practice hand movements and gestures in order to “become the piece not just sing it,” said Mays. Two of the songs they practice are “More Abundantly” by Ricky Dillard and “Emmanuel” by Norman Hutchins.
Mays hopes to use his music education major to take over as director of music at his high school. He first got involved in music when he was five years old. Along with singing, Mays also plays various instruments. His past musical experience in and out of the church has established his passion for gospel music. Until his future directing job, Mays will continue to lead Voices of Praise.
The gospel choir will be performing at the MLK brunch in January and the Gospel Extravaganza on Feb. 1.
