Skateboarder carves his own path on campus

Wait a minute. He’s a skateboarder?

Indeed, he is.

Izaiah Webb, ‘20, seems like he’s just a book cover. Many know Webb as a student-athlete and resident assistant.

These two things are what Webb is known for. Now, this is exactly why the saying “never judge a book by its cover” exists. Webb is more than what he presents. He has a hidden hobby that only a few know about.

That hidden hobby is skateboarding.

“When I was younger, probably around 7, my mom got this Walmart (skate)board,” Webb said. “That’s kind of how it all started.”

Webb would ride his first skateboard around and attempt to do tricks on it, building passion every push of the way. Once his neighbor taught him how to ollie, things started to take off.

Webb started to spend a lot more time practicing, savoring his newfound hobby heavily. His passion was there but faded once he got to middle school. He took a long break, deciding to focus more on other hobbies. It was only until recently when Webb returned to skateboarding.

“I didn’t get back into it until my sophomore year of college.”

Since returning, Webb has found his passion again. He has gotten even better than he was as a kid at skateboarding. He has learned so much since returning and doesn’t see the spark dying anytime soon.

“I really do love it. I love the community. Definitely going to try to learn how to do more tricks (and) progress in skateboarding,” Webb said.
