Fueled by donuts and coffee, students from the Congress Park Newspaper Club collaborated with the Chronicle to create three multimedia stories. Covering fashion, coffee and finals, the five students worked with editors to put together stories while gaining experience from college-level journalists.
Led by advisor Kristy Simak, the newspaper club releases a monthly digital newsletter for parents and faculty. The 5th and 6th-graders work together to write, edit and produce their newsletters. They used similar strategies while working with Chronicle editors and other student journalists to create the stories they pitched.
The students went out in small groups to interview NCC students, take pictures and record audio for their stories. While Chronicle editors went along with them, the students asked all of the questions. After gathering the information and putting the stories together, the students were rewarded with donuts, cookies and pizza.
Though their work was over for the day, the students stayed to watch the Chronicle editor’s final staff meeting of the year. They were able to ask the entire staff questions about their work and what it takes to work at a student-run college publication.
Before leaving for the day, the students worked with multimedia editor Peter Hunt Szpytek to get a rundown of how to set-up an interview on camera and practice by interviewing their advisor.
