Students share favorite Thanksgiving foods

Thanksgiving is best known for its traditional meal shared among family and friends. Americans tend to think of turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie as staples of Thanksgiving. However, families tend to add their own unique traditions and specialties to their holiday cuisine.

Home for the holiday

NCC plans to switch to remote learning once Thanksgiving break arrives, which means that most students will move off-campus or return home.

Some students described the foods they are most excited to enjoy at Thanksgiving:

“My mom’s baked mac and cheese!” — Haven Denson, ’22.

“Definitely potatoes! My dad makes these incredible twice-baked potatoes that he puts paprika on and it’s absolutely incredible. That, or rolls.” — Nick Horky, ’21.

“I think I like stuffing the most.” — Abi McKenzie, ’23.

“It has to be ham for sure.” — Kenny Miller, ’21.

“My favorite Thanksgiving food is the green bean casserole!” — Maria Clara Ospina, ’21.

“Cranberry sauce, peak Thanksgiving food.” — Sam Selakovich, ’23.

“Mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie!” — Yaitova Spiegel, ’23.

“Mashed potatoes; my mom knows to make extra because she knows I’ll get two or three servings! It’s special to me because she only makes them on Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I never get to have them any other time of year, and she makes them homemade, so it’s nothing I could try and replicate myself.” — Brooke Telesky, ’24.

“Any of the casseroles — probably green bean. But if we’re talking more generally, then I always love a good mashed potato.” — Grace Watson, ’23.

NCC Friendsgiving

Kaufman Dining Hall will continue its tradition of Friendsgiving this year, though it will look different from last year’s event.

On Nov. 19, students can pick up their favorite Thanksgiving dishes at Kaufman from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Questions and allergy concerns can be addressed to NCC Dining Services at diningservices@noctrl.edu or 630-637-5645.
