Over the past few weeks, COVID-19 cases have risen to an all-time high on NCC’s campus, in DuPage County and in Illinois.
There has been a total of 511,183 positive COVID-19 cases in Illinois, along with 10,289 deaths. Moreover, DuPage County has had 31,830 positive cases and 643 deaths in total.
Today, the Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed a record-high of 12,623 new cases in a single day, with 79 additional deaths.
On campus, a total of 204 people have tested positive, including 196 students and eight staff members.
“I think that (the) rise in cases is discouraging, although not surprising. From an epidemiological perspective, we have a pretty good handle on how/why viruses like this spread,” said Michael Stefanik, assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience. “Absent a broader, more cohesive national strategy to limit cases, this recent rise in cases is pretty much as predicted.”
Yesterday, Nov. 9, Gov. Pritzker issued additional mitigation measures for Illinois’ Region 8, which includes DuPage County. These Tier 2 Resurgence Mitigations will go into effect on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Additional changes to NCC
In addition to previous resurgence restrictions made last month, President Troy Hammond has announced new changes to on-campus events. As of Nov. 9, the College has reduced the number of maximum attendees for in-person College-approved events to 10 people.
This also applies to any in-person classes, which have already been assessed for the necessary health and safety measures. Organized athletics activities on campus have also been temporarily suspended until Friday, Nov. 13 due to a rapid increase in positive cases among student-athletes.
Members of the NCC community that are having positive symptoms of COVID-19 or have recently been exposed to someone with positive symptoms should notify the College using the COVID-19 reporting form.
