On September 24, the NCC Choral Ensemble performed for the first time in-person in over a year and a half. The NCC Chamber Singers, Woman’s Chorale and Concert Choir all performed. The event took place in front of the Roland Center Boilerhouse Café.
Choral Program
NCC’s choral program is under the direction of Dr. Ramona Wis and professor Laura Coster. They oversee the four choirs, each with very unique musical styles.
Three of the four Choral Ensemble groups performed in front of the Boilerhouse. This included Women’s Chorale, first-years through seniors based from auditions. Also, Chamber Singers, the most selective choir with 18-24 mixed voice ensemble. Finally, Concert Choir with a 45 voice choir that has a long tradition of musical excellence.
Performer’s perspective
Jake Rehling, ’23, is included in Chamber Singers and Concert Choir. Being apart of numerous choir groups was difficult for Rehling during COVID-19, as restrictions still continue this year.
“The limitations are somewhat difficult but doable during COVID-19. Our rehearsal time has been cut to 45-minutes. The singer’s masks are restricting but needed to keep everyone safe,” said Rehling.
However, he loved the experience performing for the public again.
Outdoor performance
At 5:15 p.m. on September 24, the Choral Ensemble performed 15-minutes for the public. This includes the famous NCC’s Alma Mater.
“It was a lot of fun singing outside with everyone. Even though it was about to rain, the trees and wind created a cool scene,” said Rehling.
Performance viewings
Students that missed the September 24 performance have another opportunity on November 19. The Choral Ensemble sing “Explore the Sound XIII” from 7-9:30 p.m. inside Wentz Concert Hall.
