Assistant Professor of Spanish, Dr. Jelena Sánchez welcomed Judges Réne Cruz and Bianca Camargo to North Central on Nov. 10. During the hour long presentation, both Cruz and Camargo told their personal stories of becoming the leaders within their own communities, along with what these appointments mean for the Latino community that they have the chance to serve.
The two judges spoke of their struggles being minorities within the law field during their time at NIU. They also discussed how proud they are of their work that they have been able to accomplish since entering the field. Neither saw themselves becoming judges. However, as their careers grew they were able to see that becoming a judge for the Aurora area was best move for their community.
With the new Illinois court redistricting, the 16th district has a much larger Latino community than before by roughly 30%. After sharing their own personal stories they were able to take questions from the audience filled with students, faculty, and alumni.
