NCC’s Asian Student Konnection (ASK) club hosted its Vietnamese Lunar New Year party on Friday, Jan. 28. The Lunar New Year occurred on Feb 1. and 2022 marks as the year of the Tiger. Tết, the name of the celebration, is one of the most important events in Vietnam. The party was held on the third floor of the Res/Rec Center from 6-8 p.m. Guests had access to activities and a table of food.
About the Lunar New Year
The party began with a presentation detailing Tết’s customs to show students the many facets of the celebration. Clothes called Áo Dài are traditionally worn, while Hoa Dại flowers are used to decorate homes, along with lanterns, dragons, and red banners. Red envelopes containing lucky money are handed from the old to the young, and a feast is prepared, which often contains the rice, pork, and bean dish Bánh Chưng.
“It’s very important to show how diverse students are, it shows the value of different cultures and backgrounds,” said Kyaw Htike, ‘22.
Foods of the celebration
Students lined up for the table of food after the presentation while music played. The food included many Tết dishes and provided students with the opportunity to sample a wide array of different items. Vietnamese coffee in both the traditional and egg varieties were also provided.
Activities for Tết
Students were able to take part in two activities afterward. The drawing competition had participants draw their best tiger, with the most voted for artist winning a prize. Students then received instructions on how to create their own red envelopes.
NCC has always prided itself on its diversity and inclusivity. Organizations like ASK are one of the main channels in bringing students from different backgrounds together. ASK welcomes any students interested in Asian culture or simply interested in having a fun time.
