Black History Month recap

0

NCC’s Office of Multicultural Affairs hosted three different events this year for Black History Month. Included in the celebrations are a presentation by keynote speaker Spencer Paysinger, the annual Gospel Extravaganza concert, and a performance by acapella group Take 6.

Keynote speaker

Black History Month celebrations kicked off with a Feb. 1 presentation by Paysinger. NCC livestreamed the event on their Youtube channel. Throughout the speech, Paysinger spoke in detail about major events in his life. First, he described a story about his grandmother fighting the school system to get his father into a predominately white school in Beverly Hills. He detailed how his grandmother’s decision to send his father to Beverly Hills High School had set him up for success. As a result of his grandmother’s decision, Paysinger ended up at the high school himself. Moreover, his time as a high school football player at Beverly Hills resulted in him joining the NFL. After his career in football, Paysinger decided to try his hand in the film industry. Subsequently, he wrote and produced the show All American.

Paysinger concluded his speech with comments on how he got to where he is today. First, he quoted the movie Players Club and compared it to his own experience. Finally, he ended the conversation by inspiring the audience to pursue what they want.

“I compel all you guys out there…if there’s something out there that you want, you guys all have individual skillsets that nobody else posses in this world,” said Paysinger, “So please, lean into that. Lean into your unique skill sets and go out and get what you want.”

The presentation ends with a couple of questions regarding All American and Paysinger’s other endeavors.

Annual Gospel Extravaganza Concert

On Feb. 19, the Voices of Praise gospel choir hosted their 34th annual Gospel Extravaganza concert in Wentz Concert Hall. The concert featured performances by the Wheaton College and Lewis University Gospel Choirs. Additionally, NCC student performances were featured in this concert.

Take 6

Take 6 will be performing on Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. in Wentz Concert Hall. The sextet has toured around the world and collaborated across genres. Previously, they have received praise from high profile artists such as Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder. Tickets range from $55-$65.
