NCC is home to a lot of pretty great things: trees, three Wentz buildings and a variety of delicious meal options. It can also be a hub for constantly changing bad weather. Whether it’s 70 degrees and sunny or the third yearly blizzard, here are five NCC students with impeccable style who never fail to look like they stepped off a runway.
Mizuki Akiyama
Year: Sophomore.
Majors: Graphic design and English language institute.
How would you define your style?
“Simple.”
What inspires your style? What sources do you draw inspiration from?
“Magazines, Instagram, my friend and styling at ZARA.”
Ryo Ishii
Year: Sophomore.
Major: Business Economics.
How would you define your style?
“I would say a mix of punk style, skater style and 90s grunge style.”
What inspires your style? What sources do you draw inspiration from?
“Everything I wear is pretty much a mix of what I like. I get inspiration from all sorts of stuff like old movies, music and skateboarding. I also chose clothes that have an interesting background, an example could be Levis denim where they have a long history, and they appear in many old movies. For me, fashion is a lifestyle, it’s a thing that shows what kind of music you listen to, what you do and what you like.”
Alana Steele
Year: Junior.
Major: Writing.
Minors: Journalism and Sociology.
How would you define your style?
“Edgy and alternative.”
What inspires your style? What sources do you draw inspiration from?
“Nothing really inspires my style per say. I more so like expressing myself through my clothes, hair, makeup and body modifications. If I know I will rock it, and I feel confident with it, I’ll buy it.”
Max Svienty
Year: Sophomore.
Major: Elementary Education.
How would you define your style?
“I would say it’s really a mix of a lot of different things. Really whatever I want to wear I will, it doesn’t matter to me if I like it, I’ll wear it. On a normal casual I’ll dress in something comfortable, usually just a pair of khakis, a T-shirt and maybe a sweatshirt, looks fine and is comfy. Some days, I like to do a little more and plan a different, usually flashier, more unique outfit…a flashier outfit is gonna include some combination of brighter colors, sweaters, crop tops, jewelry and other fun things to spice it up a bit.”
“I really love earrings and would say they are a huge part of building an outfit for me. I counted and I’ve got 44 different earrings, so earrings often make it into my outfits. They are a lot of fun, especially the different dangly ones I have collected, and really versatile for different fits and color schemes.”
What inspires your style? What sources do you draw inspiration from?
“I draw influence from a lot of different places. Largely, I would say if I like something I’ll figure out a way to wear it. I would say my largest influences come from alternative subcultures. There’s a little hint of skate, punk, emo, rock, hippie and many others in a lot of the clothes I wear. I’m also a big outdoor person, so the outdoors is another influence both in outdoor wear and outdoor themed wear.”
“Another big influence on my fashion and style definitely comes from being a queer individual. Queer fashion, and fashion in general, is so expansive it can’t really be put into one box, but I would say being a member of the LGBTQ+ community has definitely impacted my style a lot. I would say the same for my style it’s not really in one box sometimes I look like a high school English teacher, sometimes I look like the guitarist in your brother’s mediocre garage band, and often I look just like a regular person blending in.”
Hinata Tanaka
Year: First-year.
Majors: Jazz Studies and Studio Art.
Minor: Animation.
How would you define your style?
“I don’t know if I should say like this by myself, but I think my style is unique and different. I don’t like to dress like everyone does, because fashion is my best tool to express myself, so I prefer to wear something that has unique color, shape or style.”
What inspires your style? What sources do you draw inspiration from?
“I like to check Japanese fashion students Instagram accounts and find favorite style. Recently I’m into watching videos of fashionable people walking on the streets in NY on TikTok.”
Wow. What a group of stylish students. Keep tuning in this semester for more NCC fashion highlights!
