Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926 and died on Sept. 8, 2022. She was the longest reigning monarch in British history. Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at her estate of Balmoral Castle. Buckingham Palace released a statement Thursday morning that she died peacefully.
Following the queen’s death, 10 to 12 days of mourning will start the United Kingdom. The death of Elizabeth II sets out Operation London Bridge. During the first week, the queen’s body will be moved to Buckingham Palace. During this time the new King Charles III will travel all over the United Kingdom. Toward the end of the mourning period, Westminster Abby will be having the funeral service during which time there will be two minutes of silence throughout the country. Afterward, the queen will be laid to rest next to her father and husband.
Student’s Reaction
Sam Fretto, ’24 heard about the queen’s death during the Student Involvement Fair. He was at the table for WONC when he heard it from a student.
“[I feel like] 96 is a good life. Unfortunately life happens, rest in peace,” said Fretto.
Accomplishments
During her reign, Elizabeth II had met with 13 U.S. presidents. She had 15 Prime Ministers and meet with five popes. She also served as the head of the Commonwealth of Nations, which included 56 countries.
Queen Elizabeth had just celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in February 2022, marking her the longest reigning monarch and the only one to have a platinum jubilee. Her death came two days after meeting with her new prime minister, Liz Truss.
Significant changes are expected to occur in the United Kingdom. Their currency will change to the face of Charles III within the next couple of years. The national anthem will also change to “God Save the King”. Flags will also need to be changed, as the current ones have the “EIIR” marking the queen’s flags.
Queen Elizabeth is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
