FILM REVIEW: “Everything Everywhere All at Once” will make you contemplate life

0

A movie is good when an audience member walks out of the theater speechless and contemplating life. Not many movies have been able to do that. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is the few exceptions to accomplish this. It was  able to overshadow other films such as “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is an A24 2022 sci-fi/adventure film. It revolves around the character of Evelyn Wang traveling the multiverse to stop Jobu Tupaki from destroying the multiverse. Now yes, this sounds like “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, but this movie is much more.

Diving into the multiverse

This movie is a look into the nihilistic question of does life truly matter. Does what we do as humans really have a meaning in life? By the end you question everything you have done in life and if it really has mattered.

When I went to go see this movie I went by myself. The whole time watching the movie I was either confused or full of tears from what was on screen. A scene in particular that got everyone tearing up was a scene involving two rocks, a dessert and subtitles. The dialogue exchanged in that scene is some of the heaviest dialogue that I have ever experienced in a movie.

The best part is I know all theater-goers felt it. After the movie I held the door for a couple who mentioned  they wanted to tell their moms they love them after watching.

“This movie is one of my favorite movies this year, if not of all time. I came in for a wild sci-fi story but came out with an existential crisis (in a good way). All the cast and crew pour their heart and soul in this movie and you can tell,” said Maxine Ocampo, ’25.

Our heroes

Even though the themes and dialogues throughout the movie deserve the high praise, there is more to praise. Big praise to Ke Huy Quan who hadn’t starred in a movie since The Goonies in 1985 as Data. His scenes as Waymond are the most sincere and heartwarming in the movie.  He also performed his own stunts throughout the movie. Quan wasn’t the only star to do so as Michelle Yeoh brings a stellar performance leading the cast as Evelyn. The cast overall is well performed and perfectly written with every ounce of care.

Final thoughts

Sadly this movie did not receive as much love as it should have. That’s due to Marvel Studios releasing “Dr. Strange and The Multiverse of Madness” the same month. However, due to high praise, this movie has been receiving more attention and even a re-release. Not to mention it has received a domestic box office of nearly $70 million.

If you have the chance to see this movie do yourself the favor and see it. There is a factor of this movie you will enjoy if you don’t enjoy it all. If I were to grade this movie I would give it an A+.
