The K-Pop girl group sensation, BLACKPINK, released their second full length album, “Born Pink”, on Sept 16. This came after dropping their pre-release single, “Pink Venom” in August.
Who is BLACKPINK?
BLACKPINK made their debut in 2016 with their song “Boombayah”, which reached 1.4 billion views on YouTube. The members, Jennie Kim, Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban, Jisoo Kim and Chaeyoung “Rose” Park, all have varying positions in their group. Their group dynamic is specifically interesting due to them explaining that they have no appointed leader in the group. Jennie is the designated rapper and vocalist, Lisa is the designated dancer, rapper, and sub-vocalist, Jisoo is the designated visual and vocalist and Chaeyoung is the designated vocalist and dancer.
“BORN PINK” discography
The title track, “Shut Down” received 33 million views on YouTube within 12 hours of its release. The song defines that they are ready for a new era, and they’re not going to back down despite the hate and criticism they’ve received. Unfortunately, not a lot of people are happy with this release. Those not happy with it deemed the song as “underwhelming” and repetitive with its songs, as it is noticed in previous songs by the group like “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” and “Kill This Love”. However this time, they went for a 90’s R&B style. In “Pink Venom”, they had lyrics that would reference famous songs from the 1990s and the early 2000s, referencing Rihanna, Celine Dion and other popular rap and R&B artists.
“Pink Venom” earned 3.18 million listens across the United States on Spotify. Comparing it to “Shut Down”, it has already earned more than one million listens which had charted another #1 on the charts of Spotify. Along with this song, they released other songs such as “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” sang by Jisoo, “Typa Girl”, sang by Lalisa, “Hard to Love” sang by Chaeyoung, “The Happiest Girl” sang by Jennie, “Tally” and “Ready For Love” sang by the entire group.
BLACKPINK’s successes & non-musical activities
BLACKPINK recently appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards to perform “Pink Venom”, and Lalisa won the “Best K-Pop” award for her first solo act, “Lalisa”. BLACKPINK was nominated for the Best Metaverse Performance, and Best Group awards. Although they didn’t win either, they have been successful in making themselves known on television. They’ve appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s Late Night Show, performing “Shut Down”. Jennie Kim will be featured in an HBO Original series, “The Idol”, and Jisoo Kim will be featured in a Korean Drama on Disney+ titled “Snowdrop”. Chaeyoung and Lisa’s activities are currently unknown.
