It always happens around the same time of the year. Whether it be done by oneself because of personal taste or others and their love for the song, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is thawed out in the middle of November or earlier. It’s a topic among the masses when it’s acceptable to usher in the song and the holiday season.
Before the cut of the turkey
Most people around this season will say the song should be heard after Thanksgiving, because it allows people to dedicate more time to the November holiday, family and being thankful for all for the things one has. It seems as though the counter to that argument is the diminishing of Thanksgiving throughout the years. Skipping Thanksgiving lets people go straight to Christmas season almost immediately and prepare for the fun that comes with it.
Another aspect to the argument is just not wanting to hear the song in general. It is a personal opinion, but with the replay-ability, it is obvious why the song could get old quickly.
“If it were up to me I wouldn’t play the song at all. If I had to play it, I would start on Cyber Monday,” said Zane Trumann, ’23.
The bummer is that those who are in the mindset of after Thanksgiving are usually considered not festive. The stigma around this song and its connection to Christmas can be much for some. Hence, they prefer to wait for December before they start entering the festive mode for the year.
At the rise of the tree
The side that will often receive criticism are those that listen to the song before Thanksgiving. They may even listen to it before November. This side begins Christmas festivities after Halloween and before Thanksgiving. The argument is that Christmas takes more importance than Thanksgiving due to the popularity of the holiday and its weeks-long celebration. Christmas usually triumphs due to the presents, as well as its emphasis on dinner and family time. Not to mention the deterioration of love for Thanksgiving due to the history surrounding it being brought up more commonly today.
Many of the people who begin playing Carey’s song prior to Thanksgiving believe that it is never too early to start the holiday season.
Whether you are someone who will thaw out Mariah before Thanksgiving or after, there are arguments for both. Overall it comes down to personal preference and when you feel it is okay to listen to it. Either way it will come eventually and there is no stopping it.
