Dyson Dog Days returned to the Dyson Wellness Center to help students prepare for finals week this year.
On Tuesday, April 25, the Dyson Wellness Center held its annual event, Dyson Dog Days, at Res/Rec Arena during community hours. Dyson brought the licensed therapy dogs to campus to help students relieve stress. Depending on each year, a varying number of dogs and their owners come to meet students. The event had an educational twist with students from an abnormal psychology class sharing information on topics that commonly impact college students.
The event drew a big turnout, as usual, with students able to stop by and stay for as long as they wanted. This allowed them to get to know the different dogs. The well-trained canines of various shapes and sizes were given lots of love, attention and potty breaks. In addition to spending time with the dogs, attendees had the opportunity to learn from the abnormal psychology students, who provided plenty of food for thought.
Among the students who came to see the dogs was Gali Cortes, ‘24. Cortes attended the event in previous years as well.
“I love coming to meet all the dogs and their owners, so I can relieve some stress during a time when students really have to focus academically,” Cortes said.
Barkin’ benefits
Therapy animals, including dogs, have been recognized by medical professionals for the benefits they provide. Some of these benefits include elevating mood, fighting off anxiety and offering social support. Therapy dogs often volunteer at various locations to assist individuals who may be facing challenges.
A tail-wagging time
The event began in 2013 and has continued to be a success throughout the years. Students and faculty are always very vocal about how much they like it, and this year was no different. It was a great way for students and animal lovers to come together and have a good time. With students teaching other students about mental health and its impacts, the event has become a great conversation starter for larger issues; it sparks valuable insights and discussions.
