The NCC Dance Team members are officially two-time national champions!
On the weekend of April 8, the team went down to Orlando, FL to compete in hopes of reclaiming their national title, which they did with flying colors.
The athletes entered the competition with a preliminary score of 86.3 in poms and 83.64 in jazz. Their final scores increased significantly, with poms rising to a high of 87.62 and jazz reaching a score of 86.22.
Members of the team are very proud of their accomplishments and all of the hard work that they put in.
Returning senior, Bailee Fyock, ’23, shared her thoughts on how it feels to be a two-time national champion.
“I am very proud of the title that we all have earned. The Dance Team did not even have a coach a couple of years ago, so it really is amazing to see how far we all have come,” said Fyock. “Adding onto that, we are technically not even considered a sport, so knowing that we are able to accomplish such things without a ton of resources, or even as much recognition as other teams may get, makes me feel very proud of us all.”
Getting ready
Gearing up for Nationals was no easy feat. The process entailed a lot of hard work and dedication. The team practiced multiple days a week and put their blood, sweat and tears into their routine. They worked around the clock, constantly making minuscule tweaks to the routine, so it would be perfect for the big day. In addition to the practices they had at NCC, they continued polishing their routine even after arriving at Nationals. They also participated in multiple master classes.
Although three core members of the squad are graduating seniors, this group of dancers has set the bar quite high for future members.
Fyock shared some final remarks on her experience over the last couple of years and her hopes for the future of the team.
“Overall, my biggest takeaway from this experience is that hard work pays off. For future years to come, I hope our Dance Team cardinals get more recognition, funding and competition exposure. Being a part of the Dance Team was a great part of my college career, and I hope that many other girls will feel the same way and try out for the team,” said Fyock.
Tryouts for the NCC Dance Team’s next season will be held in the early portion of the fall 2023 semester.
