With a core of veteran players and an exciting group of newcomers, the NCC women’s lacrosse team looks to make a impactful statement this season.
Looking back: A season of growth
The NCC women’s lacrosse team finished the 2024 season with a record of 7-7, making positive moves in key areas such as offensive efficiency and defensive efforts. Altogether, Coach Barakos-Berkman reflected on the team’s development and the lessons learned from last year’s campaign.
“We saw a lot of growth last season, especially in how we executed in transition and controlled possession,” said Barakos-Berkman. “This year, we want to build on that momentum and refine our ability to close out tight games.”
Key returners
A solid core of returning players who contribute significant leadership and experience to the field will be the Cardinals’ foundation. With her speed, vision, and scoring prowess, graduate midfielder Ellie Gosselin ’24/M, ’26, is anticipated to play a crucial role on both the attacking and defensive ends. The backline will be anchored by senior midfielder Abby MacKenzie, ’25, who will give the defensive unit stability. Additionally, the squad will rely on Taylor Smith, ’25, a seasoned midfielder, to be a reliable presence, guiding the defense and making crucial plays all season long.
Promising Newcomers
North Central has filled its roster with a talented group of newcomers. This includes several first-year players who are destined to make an immediate impact. First-year attacker Anna Williamson, ’28, has already shown her scoring ability in preseason play. Additionally, first-year Samantha Devens, ’28, adds depth and versatility to the defensive end. The addition of these players will provide the Cardinals with more offensive firepower and depth across all positions.
Coaching Perspective
Barakos-Berkman, leading the team since 2022, emphasizes the importance of team culture. Chiefly, she highlighted the program’s team environment. She stated that “We strive to create a space where every player feels valued and empowered to contribute.” With more scoring options and better ball movement, the Cardinals’ offensive unit appears ready for a successful season.
Season Outlook
The Cardinals’ schedule is a mix of non-conference and College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) matchups that will help prepare the team for CCIW competition. Games against conference rivals such as Illinois Wesleyan and Augustana will be crucial in determining the team’s postseason rankings. Additionally, a late-season showdown with Carthage could have significant playoff implications, making it a must-watch game. Key games include:
- February 21: Season opener at Beloit College in Wisconsin.
- March 8: Home game against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
- April 16: Conference clash at Illinois Wesleyan University.
With a balanced mix of experienced leaders and emerging talent, North Central is setting its sights on a deep postseason run. Correspondingly, the team’s primary goal includes improving upon last year’s record. In the process they hope to gain momentum to contend for a CCIW title and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. With the journey beginning soon, the Cardinals are ready to rise to the challenge.
