Vision’s director spotlight: Quentin Tarantino

The film industry is filled with countless talented directors that transform their vision onto the big screen for the public to enjoy. All have their own style, technique and flair. These creative aspects of films drive viewers to hold favorites in terms of directors. Putting one of the most unique directors under the spotlight, Quentin Tarantino has reached a reputation of having some of the most distinctive films.

It is apparent to the viewer that they are watching a Tarantino movie if they see copious amounts of orangish-red blood, foul language and possibly racial epithets. Tarantino’s movies usually contain high-octane action, including a multitude of gunfights and other means of violence. These are the same instruments that he uses to form a rather awkward aura in some of his scenes. Many casual movie viewers are not experienced to encountering these emotions during a movie viewing. It is likely for this reason that the public is a bit separated concerning the opinion of Tarantino.

His movies can come off as abrasive or over the top for those who are not familiar with his style. Viewers also hold negative views on this director due to his lack of fear for backlash when using vulgar or racist language in his films. In “Django Unchained,” the story of a vengeful slave-turned-bounty hunter, he did not hold back with offensive discourse. The amount of racial slurs repeated in that film may scare off some, or for those who do not recognize an artist’s vision with a film’s concept may perceive the whole thing as racist. Appreciating his style or not, Tarantino’s movies define the term “cult classic.”

Tarantino tells stories he usually writes himself, commonly filled with extensively long and well-written dialogue-only scenes. Tarantino has mastered the art of using one setting to contain some of the most suspenseful and captivating scenes.

An outstanding example of this is “Inglourious Basterds,” a movie with only a number of settings. However, the conversations the actors hold with each other are some of the most engaging and tension-building moments in the film. There is an acknowledgment of exceptional writing combined with directing when a movie can blow you away with nothing but efficient storytelling through drawn-out dialogue.

Another palpable aspect of Tarantino’s films is his use of a common cast. He has an outstanding eye for talent when it comes to his actors. Due to this very reason, he uses the same actors in almost all of his films. Honestly, you cannot blame him as these actors, such as Christoph Waltz, Brad Pitt and Samuel Jackson, are able to pull off some of Tarantino’s most interesting characters – especially Christoph Waltz. Despite taking the role of character on the wrong side of history in “Inglourious Basterds,” Waltz puts on a charming and charismatic performance while portraying a Nazi officer.

Tarantino also cannot help himself when it comes to cameos. He enjoys putting himself into his own movies, ranging from dialogue roles, being an extra or even as a corpse. Similar to Stan Lee’s cameos, it becomes an amusing activity to try to detect Tarantino’s role in each movie.

Quentin Tarantino has produced some of the most niche, creative and unique films of our time. Solely based on the risks he takes in writing these films is admirable. If Tarantino is one of your favorite directors, you know the hype and excitement anytime you experience one of his works as you have expectations of the action, grand storytelling and suspenseful moments to come.
