The Cardinal softball team is tied for first in the CCIW with a 6-2 record and has gone on a couple of long winning streaks this season. What you may not know are the changes and challenges that the Cards have faced on their journey this season.

“We have five players that are no longer with us this season and seven new additions,” said head coach Jim Kulawiak.

Seven players may not seem like a lot, but it amounts to approximately 41% of the Cardinals Roster.

After opening the 2014 season is Orlando, Fla., the Cardinals are finally starting to get accustomed to the Illinois weather.

“The weather is always a problem; you just try to do the best you can,” said Kulawiak.

With a record of 24-5 and 6-2 in conference play, of which are atop the CCIW, the season still has been difficult, but one obstacle stands out most according to Kuwaliak.

“Playing without key player,” said Kuwaliak. “Carly Trenhaile and Kiersten Tinkoff, were out for 13 games with injuries

But it was an obstacle the Cardinals were prepared for, as injuries occur in every sport and affect just about every team

“This is why you practice, so everyone is ready when the opportunity comes,” said Kuwaliak.  “Jordan Johnson, Bri Floyd and Jordan Beck, have stepped up to cover for Trenhaile and Tinkoff, and did a very nice job.”

Being prepared is essential in softball too. Junior shortstop Cecilia Portillo leads the Cardinals in runs scores and stands atop the top five in the CCIW. Outside of getting on base and having her teammates drive Portillo in, the junior enjoys running to continue to be a threat on the bases.

“A few of my teammates and I are weird and enjoy doing sprints during the offseason and whenever we can find time during [the]season,” said Portillo. “That has helped our all-around strength and endurance for games.”

Despite a great junior campaign, the biggest highlight for Portillo thus far has been playing with individuals who the game as much as she does.

“Being able to share the field with other individuals who share the same passion and love for the game as I do,” said Portillo.

North Central gets back to the diamond today, in a nonconference doubleheader against local rival Aurora University. First pitch for game one is expected to be thrown at 3 p.m. from at the Stuart Sports Complex.
