On Saturday, May 17 North Central College had their annual Springfest event where students could take a break from their studies and kick back with a fun-filled weekend. Headlining the evening was the concert with Yellowcard and opening for them was the Chicago-based band Mighty Fox.
With a ‘90s theme stamped on the advertisements, students threw on their snapbacks and pulled out their plaid. The weather may have been questionable to some, but that didn’t stop the College from raising the roof when they moved the festivities into Res/Rec.
From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. students formed teams to play bags with their friends and enjoy a meal from the provided food trucks before Springfest started.
From 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. students raced over to meet and greet Mighty Fox in Old Main Plaza. There were also posters available for signing provided by the Chronicle.
Starting at 4 p.m. Springfest activities filled the Rec center. They ranged from a bungee trampoline to an inflatable rock-climbing wall. They even had human bowling.
One of the attractions that students participated in was the breathalyzer, hosted by the Dyson Wellness Center. Participants who blew under the legal limit received a free t-shirt promoting the knowledge of the legal limit for alcohol.
They also had an event for $1, where you could throw a whipped cream pie at students like Jack Ryan, Greg Whalen and Meredith Lanan. If you were feeling a little more daring, staff members such as Jared Bogan, Sarah Avery, Kevin McCarthy and Whitney Roberts also volunteered as tribute.
It may have been all fun and games, but as the festival wound down all of the crowds gathered at the DJ booth with their raffle tickets that they won at the games they played. Some of the prizes available were an iPad Mini, a portable wireless speaker, a Keurig, a Boy Meets World pack with candy, a 24-inch TV and more.
To fit the 90’s throwback theme, some events included a VHS rewind contest, hoola-hooping contests, and a “Name that ‘90s tune” event hosted by the college radio station, WONC.
As the events came to a close, students took a hike up the hill across campus to Pfeiffer Hall for the main event. Filing into the hall, students took their seats for a concert that would get them jumping. Mighty Fox started off the night with a few songs off their EP and the witty band, Yellowcard brought the house down.
