How Naperville got its own theme song

Do you love Downtown Naperville?
Sean Sacramento sure does. He might just be the most recognizable Napervillian–so long as you’re not over 35.

“In terms of my age group, I actually think people know me more than the mayor”, Sacramento said to me over Zoom, “I’m not saying that to flex or anything. Just based on what I’ve seen.”

Many giant names like Bob Odenkirk (“Breaking Bad”), Evan Lysacek (Olympic Gold Medalist), and John Schuster (stage name: John Summit) originate from Naperville. They all moved once famous. But instead of leaving it in the rearview, Sean built his whole career on Naperville.

The viral earworm

The melody for “Downtown Naperville” popped into his head during September 2025 while working at Kilwins candy store downtown. Sean ran into the storage room to record some lyrics on his phone before he lost the creative spark.

“And the rest is history,” Sean said, “A lot of my ideas happen like that. Like a divine inspiration.”

The chorus steals the show: “Yeah, I love down-down-downtown Naperville.” The raucous refrain has led to the original Instagram post being shared a staggering 34,600 times with more than half-a-million views. That number is more typical of a video with 10 times the views as this one. Less flattering though is the exceedingly low view-to-like ratio of 43:1. Listen to the song and learn why. Or maybe you’ll love it just like Mayor Scott Wehrli did.

Home is where the heart is

The 20-year-old Metea Valley graduate is actually from Aurora, but Naperville is where he worked hard at Kilwins and played harder. On October 28, 2025, Sean’s life would change forever when he posted himself dancing to his song “Downtown Naperville”. His adoration comes across loud and clear.

“Downtown Chicago has a lot of smog, and it smells like a hog
Downtown Naperville is safe, and it’s really clean
And though it’s pretty unknown, it’s more cool than the Bean”

Always smiling unless deep in thought, only Sean’s special brand of energy could transform lyrics like these into something genuinely listenable.

It’s not you, it’s me

In the same way Radiohead came to hate playing their hit “Creep”, Sean is now distancing himself from the song that put him on the radar lest he become a one-hit-wonder. In fact, I was surprised to learn that I could not interview Sean in person. The reason? Sean moved to Nashville, Tennessee, also known as music city, in mid-January for a 15-week professional program at Greenville University’s Contemporary Music Center.

It wouldn’t be fair to say Sean’s transition to gospel pop-singer came out of nowhere. He’s wearing a shirt that reads, “Catch Up with Jesus” for Pete’s sake.

Deeply exploring my musicality is my priority right now,” Sean said, “I want to bring people closer to the Lord and push the boundaries of what pop music can be.”

Sean Sacramento is his real name. It’s safe to say he’s not currently considering legally changing it to Sean Naperville.
